Texture is an often-overlooked aspect of fashion however it can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of an outfit. In addition to its practical use, incorporating different textures into your wardrobe can create depth and interest, even connecting you with your senses. Texture refers to the tactile quality of a material, with the use of our touch sense we can determine the texture of a fabric, for example, we can recognise a smooth, rough silky or coarse material. There are multiple ways to curate texture within an outfit layering materials, wearing contrasting fabrics, sewing, and crafting. Each technique gives a different desired effect.
One type of textured material that has been popular in recent years is silk. Silk is a soft and smooth material that has a luxurious feel. Silk originally blew up in Chinese culture in the 14th century, with four types of natural silks including Mulberry, Eri, Muga and Tasser. Natural silk is an incredibly expensive textile, which is why artificial silk was later developed in the 1900s as a cheaper alternative, made from a mix of natural fibres such as cotton and wool with synthetic ones such as nylon and polyester. Silk can bring much value to your wardrobe with its breathable and lightweight qualities, it can be used to layer or worn on its own as a statement piece.
Similar to silk, Organza is another interesting fabric. Delicate and sheer Organza has a light airy texture, typically a popular choice for formal wear and special occasions such as weddings. Organza is made from a thin and transparent fabric this is tightly woven in a plain weave pattern, giving it a crisp feel. Embroidery and beading are commonly applied to organza to add texture and visual interest to a garment. Due to its aesthetic quality, organza is often layered with other fabrics, such as silk or satin, to create a contrasting effect. Mixing and matching different textures is a great way to elevate an outfit. For example, pairing organza with a satin or silk will create visual balance and look that is sure to turn heads.
When it comes to sewing and crafting, texture is important to consider. Different fabrics and materials have unique textures that can impact the look and feel of a garment. Accessories are often overlooked when approaching an outfit, however, they are an essential way of creating contrast. The use of trims and embellishments such as buttons, sequins and embroidery can add texture and visual interest to a finished piece. By understanding and utilizing texture when composing outfits, you can create beautiful and unique items that are not only visually appealing but also tactilely stimulating.
